Different Types of Microblades

time2022/08/24

PMU artists love to experiment, and over the years they have developed different types of microblade with slightly different results. Let's take a look at 4 different types of micro blades.

Micro blades have evolved so much over the years that you can now get many styles and variations. That's great because if you're going for permanent brows, you have plenty of options to choose from, and you can make your brows look exactly how you want them.

PMU artists love to experiment, and over the years they have developed different types of microblade with slightly different results. Let's take a look at 4 different types of micro blades.

What are the different types of microblade?

Microshading is a brow PMU technology that adds a shadow to browse by adding pigment in small dots to create a powdery finish. While the shade can be done alone, it is often combined with a microblade stroke.

This combination of strokes and shadows goes by many names:

Micro shadow

Combination eyebrows

Brush your brows (if the shade has a distinct gradient)

Fusion eyebrows

Blend brows

All of these are essentially the same. Microblading strokes are drawn only in the head or the entire arch of the brow. Use machine or hand coloring tools to colorize the areas between the hairs.

Alternatively, you don't need a stroke at all, but that version is often called a pink brow.

The combination of strokes and shading is more dramatic than a basic microblade. It's also better for oily skin than just manual strokes -- an overproduction of sebum can blur and diffuse strokes, so it's best to have some shade to cover up pigment migration.

Nano blade

One trend that has emerged over the past year or so is manual microblading with very fine blades. In the past, artists mainly used blades with a diameter of 0.20–0.22mm. These numbers may not mean much to you, but let's put it in perspective: Now, many of them use 0.18mm blades, called nano blades.

Microblades + nanoblades = nanoblades!

Sounds easy, right? Well, the terminology of the PMU industry can be confusing. While most artists consider nano blades to be just tiny blades done with nano blades, others call their robotic hair brushstrokes nano blades, but more on that below.

The untrained eye might not be able to distinguish between the two different types of micro blades, but nano blades are so thin that they produce finer strokes. Brows look fuller and more refined with less chance for the pigment to spread.

Nano eyebrows

Nano eyebrows are machine-finished, hair-stroked eyebrows. The PMU device has thin needles on top that can go in and out at high speed to create an image on the skin and inject paint into it.

These paint dots can be drawn very close together to form a brushstroke. You can differentiate between manual and digital microblade with the extreme precision provided by the PMU machine, so each stroke can be placed exactly where you want it.

Machine implementations are said to be gentler on the skin, less likely to be excessive skin trauma, and pigments administered in this way last longer in the skin.

For customers with oily, mature, or sensitive skin, Nano Eyebrow is the best choice among different types of micro blades.

Pixel blade

Finally, we should also mention pixellating, a manual technique that draws strokes by poking at the skin with a "slim" blade rather than dragging.

Now, few artists make microblading in this way. Those claiming it's a gentler microblading because the pigment is knocked in without cutting through the skin. Getting it right, however, is a tricky technique, and you can't really get the precision and color saturation that a PMU machine offers.
